Operation Southern Wings 2005
| FL 3 Team members erect a "tent city" at the St Petersburg Airport as
part of the three day training exercise dubbed "Operation Southern
Wings". The tents serve a number of functions as patient treatment
areas, equipment storage, dormitories, and a pharmacy. |

| HAZMAT/ DECON teams set up to decontaminate human "victims" and urban
search and rescue dogs before treatment by the FL 3-DMAT members. |
| Once patients are decontaminated and safe to work on, they art carried
to one of the DMAT treatment tents for care. The tents are set up to
allow for patient acuity and flow. All needed equipment and materials
are close at hand. |

Mass Casualty incidents involving contaminated "victims" may
require mass decontamination methods such as those pictured here. Those
contaminated would strip down, bag their clothing, and enter a deluge
of water. They would be instructed to raise their arms and turn as they
passed through the water provided by Two fire trucks parked to form a
"V". As they emerged from the stream they would be given white "bunny
suits" to wear. Large numbers could be decontaminated in this manner.

| Exercises like Southern Wings provide a unique laboratory for
corporations that are developing advanced disaster related equipment
and materials.
| Historically, DMAT personnel have been used to evacuate patients from
areas of devastation to places where definitive care can be obtained.
On the ground and in the air, team members learn fixed wing and rotor
aircraft etiquette that must be followed in the handling of patients. |

| Agencies like the Salvation Army
and the Red Cross don’t seek the
spotlight, but work tirelessly in the background to support disaster
readiness. Recent disaster history has taught us that when catastrophe
strikes, you won’t find these support agencies far behind. |
